1. The Public Opinion Marker

Inscription. The first Westerville newspaper was printed in 1867. Published by the Guthrie Brothers, James and John, it was named The Reveille. The brothers found that the newspaper business was not an easy way to make a living. They were reduced to accepting eggs, corn and even chickens in payment for subscriptions.

Between the first paper in 1867 and 1885, there were numerous newspaper name and ownership changes. In 1885, Public Opinion was adopted as the publication's name. This building, constructed in 1895, housed the newspaper offices and printing operation until 1924, when it moved to 40 West Main Street.

Subsequently, the building has been used as an auto repair shop, laundromat, a diaper service called Tidy Didy, and other retail businesses.
