Westerville in Franklin County, Ohio — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
42-44 North State Street
42 North State was built by Malachi Wheatcraft, an insurance agent. The second floor was used as a residence though the middle door and overhanging porch have since been removed. First floor occupants have included a jewelry store, restaurant, dry cleaners, and barbershop.
44 North State was built by Reverend William Hanby. The harness business he relocated here was previously housed in his barn which served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Hanby was a founding trustee and staunch supporter of Otterbein University. A drug store later operated in this space for almost forty years. Louis F. Ritter, pictured here, was the proprietor for many of these years. When electric storefront signs came into use, Miller & Ritter Druggists was the first business in Uptown to install one.
Erected by Uptown Westerville Inc.
