1. Methodism in Westerville Marker
In that same year, Methodists determined there was a need to establish an institution of high grade. Matthew and Peter Westervelt donated land on which to build Blendon Young Men's Seminary. While the seminary was short-lived, its sale to the Church of the United Brethren in Christ led to that denomination's opening Otterbein University in 1847.
The second church edifice to stand on this corner was constructed in 1887. Joseph Yost of Columbus was selected as architect. Yost later designed the Hotel Holmes and, with business partner Frank Packard, Vine Street School.
Church of the Messiah United Methodist, which stands on this corner today, was dedicated in February 1959. The cornerstones of the 1838 and 1887 buildings were incorporated into the chapel's foundation design.
