Attack Helicopters
Bell AH-1G Cobra
Designed during the early stages Vietnam War, the Cobra provided fire support to grounds forces, escorted transport helicopters, and conducted armed reconnaissance. The Boeing AH-64 Apache replaced the Cobra in the U.S. Army, but it is still the attack helicopter of the Marine Corps. This model has a 7.62mm minigun and 40mm grenade launcher in its chin turret and four rocket pods holding 52 70mm rockets.
Capabilities
Weapons: nose gun turret, 70mm rockets, 7.62 minigun pod or 20mm cannon
Max Speed: 172 mph
Cruising Speed: 130 mph
Range: 357 miles
Lockheed AH-56A Cheyenne
With a unique rear "pushing propeller," the Cheyenne was a prototype built for speed. It was the Army's first attempt at a dedicated attack helicopter. Designed to attack by diving at its target, the environment in Vietnam and the threat of shoulder-fired missiles combined with delays and cost overruns caused it to be dropped for the Cobra. Only ten were ever built.
Capabilities
Weapons: nose and belly gun turret, 70mm FFA rockets, 8GM-71 TOW missles
Max Speed: 253 mph
Crusing Speed: 225 mph
Range: 875 miles
