Schin op Geul in Valkenburg aan de Geul, Limburg, Netherlands — Northwestern Europe
Schin op Geul - May 10, 1940
| | 75 jaar Bevrijding fotoroute | |
The Germans encountered Dutch resistance in Schin op Geul on May 10, 1940. There were 40 soldiers here, who occupied three positions in the village on both Geul bridges and near the church. One of the Geul bridges was blown up by the Dutch, and the remaining bridge had a casemate a short distance away, just like the church. The casemate at the church took a heavy toll and was shelled by German tanks. Soldier Evert Mirck was killed and another was injured. Although the Dutch had defended themselves valiantly, the German superior power ultimately proved to be too great. The casemate is now hidden behind the Llubljana monument.
Erected 2019. (Marker Number 18/20.)
