The Church
While the church tower was built in the 12th or 13th century, the nave, which was completed in 1818, was built in the classicist style. It was planned by the senior architect and court building director Georg Moller. The grisaille paintings in the interior were done by the Darmstadt court painter Josef Sandhaas. In 1908, the court painter Carl Lanz renovated the interior. The organ was built by the organ builder Philipp Ernst Wegmann in 1771. In addition to the oldest, early modern bell, two other bells ring in the Gloria chime with the tones a h d: the memorial bell for the fallen in the two world wars and the home bell cast in 1847, on loan from the Protestant church in Pritter on the island of Wolin in West Pomerania.
From the beginning, Schneppenhausen belonged to the parish of Gräfenhausen, which had been independent since 1310, as a branch parish, i.e. as a dependent “daughter” parish. In 1537, the parishes of Gräfenhausen and Schneppenhausen were reformed. Between 1547 and 1551, the towns temporarily returned to Catholicism before another reformation followed. To this day, the parish of Gräfenhausen-Schneppenhausen belongs to the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau.
