Excerpt (in translation): Schin op Geul was located particularly strategically at a junction of (rail) roads from Germany to Maastricht. It was therefore prominently in the path of the German troops, with 4.PD forming the vanguard in this sector. There were three S-casemates with a light machine gun along the roads. The casemate near the church in Schin op Geul, at a railway crossing and near the road towards Valkenburg. Tanks moved west along that road. They came to

2. Evert L. Mirck Memorial - wide view
The marker is visible here a little bit to the left of the Llubjana monument. As noted on the marker located just a few steps away, Mirck was one of a group of 40 Dutch soldiers trying to hold off the Germans on the first day of the invasion. The casemate Mirck was in, located here, took heavy tank fire.
a stop in front of the roadblock. Fire was opened on German soldiers, but armored cars and tanks opened fire on the casemate, with a loophole hit killing the soldier Mirck and wounding another.
