Vestal in Broome County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Vestal 1823-1872
Early settler began farming as soon as the land was cleared. Sawmills, grist mills, small tanneries, shoemakers, blacksmiths, wagon makers, grocers, and one-room school districts served the growing town.
Roads were laid out by Highway Superintendents who were elected at each annual town meeting and cared for by pathmasters.
Lumbermen floated logs down the Choconut and Tracy Creeks to the Susquehanna where they lashed together log rafts to carry both logs and cut lumber down river for sale. The men would return to repeat the trip again before spring water levels began to drop.
