Inscription. In 1850, Peyton Roscoe donated seven acres of land here to build a male and a female academy. A co-educational elementary school replaced the 1850 buildings in 1910, with a high school to follow in 1920. Classes were held in tents and a frame house from 1917 until the building was completed. In 1937 a gymnasium was added, and a new main building in 1945. Additional expansions occurred from 1951-60. Converted to a middle school in 1986, the building was razed in 2015.
