The Newland-Wood Fire Company of the Stillwater Fire Department has a long history of protecting the residents of the Village of Stillwater, New York. This tradition began during the Revolutionary War and has continued until now.

Establishing a New Fire Service Several disastrous blazes occurred throughout the village in the early 1870 including the Stillwater covered bridge which was set ablaze while the new post office was being burglarized. These losses proved to the community that a well trained and well-equipped fire department was needed. Two fire companies were formed in Stillwater. These were the Newland Hose Company #1, named after prominent mill owner John Newland, and the E.I. Wood Steamer Company #2, named after respected merchant and Village President Edward I. Wood. A refurbished horse-drawn Button Steamer was purchased in 1871, followed by a hand pumper and hose in 1875, thus ending the use of the bucket brigade.

The Newland Wood Fire House
A blaze was discovered at the original firehouse on January 28, 1896 One lone man pulled the steamer, still owned by the firehouse, out of the burning building, but all other equipment and records were lost. Within a year a new two-story brick firehouse was built. Storage for both companies was contained on the lower level
