1. Reverend James Preston Poindexter Marker
Inscription. Born in 1819 to Joseph, a journalist, and his wife Evelina, a woman of Cherokee/African descent, at age 10 Poindexter apprenticed as a barber to provide his livelihood. He and wife Amelia came to Columbus in 1838. His barber shop was on S. High across from the Capital. Poindexter's national political and community interests were well respected, rooted in faithful concern for all races. He became a conductor for the UGRR, member of City Council and Columbus School Board, and chairman, trustee, or member in over a dozen organizations. Columbus' first public housing, Poindexter Village (est. 1940), bears his name (red pavers on his lot are from these buildings). In 1858 he reunited anti-slavery Baptist church & 2nd Baptist Church (est. 1836) serving as pastor for 40 years. He died in 1907.
