Dilophosaurus
die-loff-oh-SOAR-us "Double-Crested Lizard"
Early Jurassic (193 million years ago), 550 lbs., United States, Other dinosaurs & fish, 6 feet, 20 feet
Fast Facts
In the film Jurassic Park, Dilophosaurus was depicted with a retractable frill and the ability to spit venom. However, there is no evidence to suggest this dinosaur had either of these characteristics in real life. Although most American dinosaur remains have been discovered west of the Mississippi River, tracks left by Dilophosaurus or a close relative were found in Connecticut in the 1960s. This led lawmakers to declare Dilophosaurus the official state dinosaur of Connecticut!
