Castle Ditch
Medieval Nottingham Castle
Castle Ditch
You are overlooking the site of a dry ditch that protected the Castle. This ditch prevented invaders from tunnelling beneath the curtain walls, and was therefore important to the Castle defences. Latrines (outdoor toilets) might well have been positioned above and emptied into this ditch, giving attackers quite an unpleasant surprise! Today a portion of the ditch is home to our adventure playground.
Inner Ditch
Today the inner ditch is partly covered by the Gallery extension. Originally, it sat between the Middle and Upper Baileys, forming a key part of the castle's defences. From the ditch, you could access storerooms and passageways carved into the rock, which are still in existence today. In the 14th century, the ditch was partially filled in to provide a location for a new bakehouse and storerooms.
