The Opéra of the rue de Richelieu
Created in 1839, this square occupies the site of the eighth opera house in Paris. Built in 1792 for Montansier on the plans of Victor Louis, it was inaugurated on April 15, 1793 under the name of the Theatre National. Renamed the Opera, it welcomed a troupe of singers on April 14, 1794. Here in particular were created Mozart's "The Magic Flute" and "la Vestal" by Spontini. Napoleon Bonaparte narrowly escaped the "machine infernal" plot of rue Saint-Nicaise, at the first hearing in France of Haydn's "Creation" here on December 24, 1800. On February 13, 1820 the Duke of Berry, heir to the throne, was stabbed by Louvel. After his death, the Opera is closed and then demolished.
