Au XVIIe siècle, deux hôtels particuliers contigus s'élèvent sur ce site, dont l'un appartient à François Michel Le Tellier, marquis de Louvois. En 1793, un théâtre, dirigé par mademoiselle Montansier, les remplace. Il est racheté par l'État en 1795 et devient le premier théâtre à disposer de sièges pour les spectateurs! En 1820, l'assassinat du duc de Berry, devant le théâtre, entraîne sa fermeture, puis sa destruction. En 1836, un premier square est aménagé, mais c'est Jean-Charles Adolphe Alphand qui lui donne son aspect actuel. La fontaine, de Louis Visconti, est érigée en 1844. Elle est ornée de sculptures symbolisant la Seine, la Loire, la Saône et la Garonne, œuvres de Jean-Baptiste-Jules Klagmann (1810-1867).

first theatre to have spectator seating! In 1820, the assassination of the Duke of Berry in front of the theatre leads to its closure and then its demolition. In 1836, a square was developed, but it is Jean-Charles Adolphe Alphand that gave it its current appearance. The fountain, by Louis Visconti, was erected in 1844. It is adorned with sculptures symbolizing the Seine, the Loire, the Saône and the Garonne, works by Jean-Baptiste-Jules Klagmann (1810-1867).
