John Anderson Moore. . Navy Commander John Anderson Moore was born on January 12, 1910, in Brownwood, Texas. He attended the United States Naval Academy and was commissioned on June 2, 1932. He served on the USS Arizona (which was sunk by the Japanese on December 7, 1941) and transferred to submarine service in November, 1934. Commander Moore took command of the USS Grayback (SS 208) submarine on June 29, 1943. He was a pioneer in the development of "Wolfpack" tactics and submerged radar approaches. The USS Grayback was in the first submarine wolfpack in the Pacific theater in World War II. Commander Moore and his heroic crew were listed as missing in action when they failed to return from a patrol. He died on February 26, 1944. John Anderson Moore received three Navy Crosses (the highest award for valor after the Medal of Honor), Purple Heart, and many more awards and decorations. The USS John A Moore (FFG 19 - Oliver Hazard Perry Class Guided Missile Frigate - commissioned November 14, 1981 - seen above) was named in honor of Brownwood native and Navy Commander John Anderson Moore whose distinguished and gallant service to his country in World War II became a hallmark for those who followed.

USS Grayback (SS-208), a Tambor-class submarine, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named for the lake herring, Coregonus artedi. She ranked 20th among all U.S. submarines in total tonnage sunk during World War II, with 63,835 tons, and 24th in number of ships sunk, with 14. She was sunk near Okinawa on 27 February 1944. Her wreck was discovered in June 2019.
