1. George Matthew Shelton Marker
Inscription. Medal of Honor recipient George Matthew Shelton was born in Brownwood, Texas on December 23, 1877, the son of Amos and Octavia Shelton. He entered the US Army in 1898. Private Shelton was a member of Company I, 23rd Infantry Regiment. On April 26, 1900, in La Paz, Leyte, Philippine Islands, during the Philippine Insurrection, Private George M Shelton advanced alone under heavy enemy fire and rescued a wounded comrade. The Medal of Honor was awarded to him on March 10, 1902. He retired with the rank of major in September, 1921. Only 75 Texans have been awarded this prestigious medal, 38 posthumously. George M Shelton was only the second Texan to receive this medal. The Medal of Honor is the highest medal for valor in battle awarded by the US to the men and women of the Armed Forces. It is given in recognition of the extraordinary courage and gallantry "Above and beyond the call of duty" demonstrated by members of the US Armed Forces. George M Shelton Drive in Brownwood (east of Danhil Drive and north of Milam Drive) was named in his honor. George Matthew Shelton died on January 18, 1949 and is buried in the San Francisco
