The museum before you explores the United States Constitution—our framework of government drafted, debated, and signed by delegates meeting inside Independence Hall in 1787.

Designed to balance and share power, the Constitution established the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. The Constitution also included an amendment process allowing the document to evolve as times change.

Amendments have been added to guarantee individual freedoms, abolish slavery, confer citizenship to the formerly enslaved, and extend voting rights to women.

For more than 200 years, the US Constitution has provided the framework for "We the People" to participate in an ongoing imperfect experiment in self-government.

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
