William Penn Annex West in Philadelphia in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
PSFS Building
The PSFS Building was opened in 1932 as the headquarters for the Philadelphia Saving Fund Society. Founding in 1816 and patterned after the savings banks established in England and Scotland after the turn of the 19th century, PSFS was America's oldest mutual savings bank at the time of the building's construction.
Designed by architects George Howe and William Lescaze. The PSFS Building is the first significant International Style skyscraper built in America. For decades, this National Historic Landmark, thirty-six story skyscraper stood as Philadelphia's tallest building, surpassed only by William Penn's statue atop City Hall. From the time of construction in 1932 it was regarded as a pioneer in skyscraper design and remains today an exceptionally modern building in form and detail. While the surrounding tower now rise far above its roofline, none can boast the luxurious materials featured throughout its interior including stainless steel, marble from around the world, terrazzo and exotic woods.
In 2000, the PSFS Building reopened as the Loews Philadelphia Hotel after the completion of an extensive rehabilitation. This historically certified rehabilitation restored the building's exterior and lavish interior features and transformed the former banking and office spaces into a unique hotel and conference center environtment.
