St. Augustine's R.C. Church
Historic Shrine
Established in 1796 A.D. by the Irish Friars of the Order of St. Augustine. Destroyed in 1844, rebuilt in 1846, and consecrated in 1848.
St. Augustine's is the original mother house of the Friars in the U.S., and the fourth oldest Catholic Church in Philadelphia.
From this center the Augustinians carried their missionary work into New England, the Hudson Valley, South Jersey, and Philadelphia's Main Line.
St. Augustine's Academy, founded in 188 at this location, was the forerunner of Villanova University, the oldest Catholic institution of higher learning in Pennsylvania.
