Inscription. The Spirit of '76 Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution honors the patriots from what is now the state of Louisiana who fought in Bernardo de Gαlvez's military campaigns of 1779-1783. Gαlvez, commanding the troops of the Spanish Army, Louisiana militiamen along with other volunteers and recruits, defeated British forces in what are now the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. On behalf of Spain, Gαlvez commanded the transport of gunpowder, muskets, uniforms, medicine, and other supplies up the Mississippi River from New Orleans to American colonists fighting the British as far away as Fort Pitt in what is now Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Many of these Louisiana Patriots are interred in St. Louis Cemetery #1 and St. Louis Cemetery #2.
