H.H. Nicolaas en Barbara kerk
Deze kerk wordt in de 13e eeuw voor het eerst in een oorkonde vermeld. Toen vermoedelijk nog als hulpkerk van de moederkerk in Schin op Geul. De toren dateert ook uit deze eeuw. In 1281 wordt Valkenburg een zelfstandige parochie en daarmee verzelfstandigt de kerk ook. De verschillende bouwwijzen verraden meerdere aanpassingen en uitbreidingen, waarvan de laatste in 1904 door architect Pierre Cuypers.
St. Nicholas and St. Barbara church
This church was first listed in a charter in the 13th century. At the time it was probably still a subsidiary of the mother church in Schin op Geul. The tower also dates from that same century. In 1281 Valkenburg became an independent parish and with this the church itself became independent too. The various building styles show the many renovations and expansions, the last of which was in 1904 by architect Pierre Cuypers.

Excerpt: This church, the oldest in Valkenburg, was established in 1281. Services began in the castle chapel and the church was started in the same year. It was dedicated to St Nicholas alone until 1600 when St Barbara was added. After the Reformation, Catholics had to share the church with the small minority of protestants, who were powerful enough to forbid Catholic use of an organ. In 1819 the church was fully returned to the Catholics. Too small, it was extended in 1833 and a new choir added in 1836. P. J. H. Cuyper added a new portal in 1891 and greatly extended the building in 1904 with chapels on both sides, a three-aisled nave behind the transept and a new choir behind that.(Submitted on June 25, 2024.)
