1. Exploring West Liberty History: Lot 17 Marker

Inscription. When he was eight years old in 1820, Thomas Cowgill accompanied his father to John Enoch’s gristmill in West Liberty. Years later he described the setting; “The land comprising John Enoch’s farm was nearly all unimproved and partly covered by a dense thicket of hazel, plum and thorn, and the prairie overgrown with wild grass,… A few small houses were built and north of the gristmill was the residence of the mill owner, John Enoch, Sr. …When my father told me we had been to West Liberty, I was somewhat surprised to learn we had been to town.”

In 1826, Dr. John Ordway described the town as having: “twelve families, one gristmill, one store, one tavern, and a Post Office.”

In 1815, John Enoch established a home and a gristmill for greinding grain on part of his family’s extensive land holdings in the Mad River Valley. Two years later, 77 lots were platted for purchase.
