Medieval Nottingham Castle
Great Chapel and Great Kitchen
The Middle Bailey was central the functioning of the medieval castle. It was the location of the Great Hall (used for celebrations), the Great Chapel (used for worship), and the Great Kitchen (where feasts were prepared). The Middle Bailey was also the site of the constable's and chaplain's residences, and -- from the late 15th century -- the State Apartments.
Excavations in the Middle Bailey have revealed skeletal remains of four people, who were probably inhabitants of the castle.
North East Tower
Here you can see ht remains of the North East Tower, built for King Henry III. It was part of an extensive building and refurbishment programme that started in 1237. The surviving chamber was originally at basement level. Evidence suggests that it might have been a basement prison cell for a time, entered via a trap door from the wooden floor above.
Henry III often stayed at Nottingham Castle. Most famously before the Battle of Lewes where he was defeated by rebel Simon de Montfort, leading to the reform of royal powers.
