1. John Steele House Marker
Inscription. This double-parlor, stuccoed adobe house was constructed c. 1862 for John and Catherine Campbell Steele. John held important civic positions in Parowan, Toquerville and the counties of Iron, Kane and Washington. He was a judge, recorder, town marshal, mayor, justice of the peace, post master, county surveyor, assessor, collector and self-appointed doctor. Catherine, whose patience and even temper contrasted dramatically with her fiery Scotch-Irish husband, was first treasurer of the Toquerville Relief Society and ran the family household for long periods while John was exploring and serving missions for the Mormon Church. John, Catherine and daughter Mary were members of the Mormon Battalion. Another daughter, Y. Elizabeth, was claimed to be the first white child born in Utah. This house served as their home for over forty years.
