English
I am the leather market, where sheep and goat skins in particular are sold. Incidentally, the French word for leather goods (maroquinerie) comes from Marrakech's leather trade. The leather here comes from the Bab Debagh tanneries and is acquired by artisans, who work the hides in the small workshops that line the streets in this area. A variety of artisans and businesspeople can be found working here, such as shoemakers, leather workers, tools and accessories salesmen, leather salesmen, and more. The areas of the souk are named after the products sold there, such as slippers, belts, bags, etc. The goods produced in the workshops today come in a wide range of shapes and colors. Artisans still make traditional products but have improved on them and created new versions to satisfy modern tastes. All around me, one can find office supplies (writing pads, pencil holders, letter trays, etc.), bags and sacks, shoes (sandals, slippers, boots, etc.), ottomans, and bellows. Ibn al-Arif, the mystic from Almeria and patron saint of artisans, died in Marrakech in the 12th century, and his mausoleum can also be found in this area.
