1. East Gate Marker
Looking at East Gate today, in all its Georgian delicacy, it is difficult to imagine this as the main gateway to Deva - one of the most important Roman fortresses in Britain. It is far easier to picture elegant Georgish ladies and gentlemen enjoying at promenade around the Walls than marching Roman legionaries.
Although East Gate has changed dramatically over time, Eastgate Street has retained its role in the heart of Chester and is still the city's busiest thoroughfare.
Standing here 1,800 years ago you would have seen Roman legionaries like these, patrolling at East Gate. The Romans built the original fortress walls both for defence and to symbolise their dominance over local tribes.
In July 1403, after the 'Hotspur' rebellion had been defeated, King Henry IV chose Chester's East Gate to display the remains of Henry 'Hotspur' Percy, as a a warning to other potential traitors. The severed heads of Sir Richard Venables and Sir Richard Vernon were also displayed on pikes above the battlements.
