The Naegle Big House
| | Utah Historic Site | |
Known as the Naegle Winery, the Naile House, or the Naegle Big House this building was constructed where it now stands in 1866-68 by John Conrad Naegle, Mormon polygamist, rancher, farmer, and colonist. The original purpose or use of the building is unclear. Different accounts indicate it was intended for various functions, including: a home for Naegle and several of his wives and families, headquarters for his widespread ranching and business enterprises, and as a winery. It has been established that the basement was used for several years as a storage and distribution cellar for the wine produced by Naegle in Toquerville.
With the end of the wine industry in Utah's Dixie and the relocation of the Naegle family and enterprises to Mexico in the late 1880's, the building was vacant until the early 1900's when it housed canning and distribution operations for locally grown figs and peaches. Later it was used to store grain, hay, and farm machinery. In 1980 the building was rennovated as a residence by Steven O'Dell Williams and Rosa LeBaron Williams.
