Inscription.
The territory of Texas was a province of Mexico until 1836 when its successful revolution established the republic of Texas. One of the most famous battles was at the Alamo. This territory joined the U.S. as a state, becoming the only commonwealth that was an independent republic before joining the union.

The annexation of Texas brought about a dispute between the U.S. and Mexico, who had never recognized the independence of Texas. In 1846 troops from both countries massed along the Rio Grande river. A raid by American troops into Mexican territory led directly to war. On February 23, 1847, U.S. general Zachary Taylor's army of 4,700 men withstood the attack of 20,000 Mexicans at Buena Vista. Mexican general Santa Ana acknowledged a bitter defeat and withdrew. This victory for Taylor contributed to his eventually becoming the 12th president of the United States.

America won every battle of the war. On February 2, 1848, a peace treaty ceded California and New Mexico to the U.S. and fixed the Rio Grande river as the boundary between Texas and Mexico. This territory also included parts of Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and Wyoming. 13,283 Americans died in the conflict.
