World War II
Europe
| | 1941 - 1945 | |
World War II was a global military conflict that was the most devastating in human history. What began in 1939 as a European conflict eventually widened to include most of the nations of the world. The war began on September 1, 1939, with the Nazi German invasion of Poland under Adolf Hitler. Germany proceeded to conquer Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, and France. By June, 1940, Great Britain stood alone against Hitler, as Italy entered the war on Germany's side. A year later, Hitler invaded the Soviet Union. After the United States declared war on Japan for attacking Pearl Harbor, Germany and Italy declared war on the United States on December 11, 1941.
Battles were fought throughout eastern and western Europe, North Africa, and the pacific, with terrible losses on both sides. The tide turned for the American and British forces on June 6, 1944, with the D-day invasion into Normandy, France. Victory in Europe was achieved on May 8, 1945.
