Inscription.
Thomas and Martha Mitchell settled in today's Canyon Country in 1860 and built a 45x60-foot adobe home about 1865. Together with the Lang and Stewart families, the Mitchells formed only the second school district in Los Angeles County. Martha taught children around the kitchen table in 1872. In the 1880s, a proper school and a wood-frame house were erected nearby, and the adobe fell into ruin. Walter Murphy, Mitchell's son-in-law, salvaged some of the bricks for a new ranch foreman's house. In 1986, in anticipation of development, the foreman's house was bulldozed. Historical Society volunteers gathered the bricks and reassembled the adobe here in 1989.
