Inscription. Not long after W. L. Shockey opened his Cripple Creek Pharmacy here in 1896, he realized pharmaceuticals were a 24-hour-a-day business in Cripple Creck. In the 1890s, most mines worked three 8-hour shifts each day, creating 'round-the-clock demand for goods and services including druggists' supplies. The pharmacy also did a brisk business in fountain treats - dispensing Pemberton's Coca Cola, Hire's Root Beer, and a new fad drink called Dr. Pepper.

Shockey's popularity with his clientele and fellow businessmen led to his election as Mayor in 1903. Around 1907, Shockey sold his pharmacy to one of his Bennett Avenue competitors, G.R. Lewis.
