St. Andrew's Episcopal Church

St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. . Church services first began in a tent in 1874, making this Manitou Springs' oldest religious congregation. Town founder, Dr. William A. Bell, donated land in 1877, and, in 1880, a chapel was built west of the current church's location. In 1885, the original chapel was moved across Cañon Avenue, where it still stands. This lot was leased to the Mineral Water Company, which constructed the greenstone retaining wall. Greenstone was quarried around Manitou Springs from 1890 until around 1940 and is only found in this area. Following an 1894 flood, the congregation decided to rebuild here On January 10, 1905, Bishop Olmstead laid the cornerstone for this church. , Local contractor M.E. Mulloy constructed the building of randomly laid greenstone in the English Gothic style, designed by H.A. Macomb of Philadelphia. The E. Frampton Glassworks of London, England made the stained glass windows in 1906. Frampton also designed the alter "Presentation" window in 1925. With minor exterior exceptions, St. Andrew's is much as it was when built., St. Andrew's is listed as contributing to the Manitou Springs' 1983 National Register and 1980 Local Historic Preservation Districts., photo captions , (top middle) The second St. Andrew's Episcopal Church was built in this imposing location to avoid the frequent flooding its previous site.
