1. Mount Vernon Red Maple Marker

Inscription. The Mount Vernon Red Maple grown at the Virginia home of George Washington, the nation's first president and commander of the colonial army that won the American War for Independence. Mount Vernon, also known as "The Little Hunting Creek Farm," was Washington's favorite parcel of land.

The red maple, commonly called "scarlet" or "swamp maple,' can be found growing extensively through eastern North America. Red maple bark extract was a source of ink and dye for the pioneers.
