1. Independence Park Black Locust Marker, Side One

Inscription. The Independence Park Black Locust Stands majestically at the entrance to Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Many key events associated with the American Revolution are tied to this historic building including the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and the writing of the U.S. Constitution.

The black locust, noted for its fragrant spring blossom and light green foliage, is often planted as an ornamental. A member of the nitrogen-fixing Legume family, this fast growing tree is used for erosion control and land reclamation projects. Colonists used the wood for corner posts in their houses. The wood was also used for fence posts, railroad ties, and mine timbers.
