What did it do?
Slate blocks, waste slate, workers, and machinery were hauled by this steam-powered hoist at an open pit slate quarry. It was the fastest of five engines that simultaneously worked cableways over the quarry. Hoists remain vital to many heavy industrial and mining operations. There were more than 1,000 overhead electric cranes in operation in the Bethlehem Plant, all of which relied on hoists to do the lifting.
