Gross, of Jackson Center., The medal, plus eight other military decorations, were presented to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel J. Gross of 506 West Pike Street, Jackson Center, by Air Force Brig. Gen. Glen J. McClernon, Commander of the Defense Electronics Supply Center in Dayton. The Bronze Star with "V" Device was conferred for heroism November 29th. in Vietnam during a combat operation with Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division, Several men in Specialist Gross' unit were wounded by a mine explosion and the group came under a heavy volume of Viet Cong sniper fire as it attempted to advance. With complete disregard for personal safety, Specialist Gross exposed himself to enemy fire and assisted in evacuating his wounded comrades to safety., Returning to his vehicle, he secured ammunition and distributed to his fellow soldiers. His valorous actions were responsible for saving several lives and successful thwarting of the insurgents' assault. His personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty reflected great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the Array. In addition to the Bronze Star with "V" Device, Specialist Gross was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action which resulted in his Dec. 16th death: The Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge, Sharpshooter Badge with rifle and automatic rifle bars, and the Marksman Badge with machine gun bar., Specialist Gross previously had twice been injured in combat with the enemy in Vietnam where he arrived in March 1968. He received the Purple Heart Sept. 8th for injuries received June 1st while on patrol duty. The second injury was received Sept. 5th while he and other members of the 25th Infantry Division were setting up an outpost near Tay Ninh. A 1965 graduate of Jackson Center High School, and a 1967 graduate of Miami-Jacobs Junior College of Business, Dayton, he entered service in October 1967. One Bobcat was wounded and fire was returned with unknown results. At 1650 hours, the battalion CRIP unit requested a dust-off for two Bobcats wounded and two Bobcats killed. A Jeep with the unit had detonated a mine on Highway 7A, just north of the junction of Highway 1., Gary's body was recovered, and the other Bobcat KIA was Michael R. Bishop of Napa County, CA.
