Newfoundland, the oldest British colony, raised a contingent of about one thousand men, and suffered severely in the Dardanelles campaign in Turkey, in 1915. The regiment attacked here at 8.45 am on 1 July 1916. By 10.00 am the tragedy was complete: of the 800 men, only 68 returned unharmed. 1 July 1916 was to be a day of mourning in Newfoundland for many years to come.
