1. 9/11 Memorial
On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, the United States was invaded by a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Wahhabi Islamist terrorist group, Al-Qaeda. Four airplanes were taken over: Two of the planes were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City; a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C.; and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Almost 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which triggered major U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism. This memorial remembers all who lost their lives and honors all First Responders in the City of Reidsville and Rockingham County. The mangled beam on the top is from the Twin Towers. The cutouts sculpted by Artist Jim Gallucci represent the First Responders on the scene that day. This horrible act of terrorism changed our world, but despite our shared grief in the aftermath of 9/11, hope, resilience, and unity lifted us up as a nation.
