On surviving WWII (in translation): When the Germans invaded the Netherlands on May 10, 1940, the 'border municipality' of Beek fell into German hands. A major event, also for Bakkerij Martens. But life in Beek 'must' continue 'as usual' in these years. Beek was hit hard during the war. On October 25, 1942, the industrial estate of nearby Geleen was mistakenly bombed by the English RAF, as they believed that they were actually hitting Aachen, Germany. During the bombing, many bombs also fell in the center of Beek, especially around Dorpstraat. When the Germans(Submitted on July 17, 2024.)were defeated in May 1945, the residents of Beek tried to pick up the thread again.
