The Roots
September 8, 1891, the Bank of Florence was incorporated as a state bank with James A McCandless named president. The original location of the institution was located at 101-03 W Main St (SW corner of Pikes Peak Ave and Main Street). The building was a two story construction and the second floor was the original Florence Hotel. The building was destroyed in 1947 by fire and only the Bank of Florence vault was left standing. You can view this vault at 103 W Main Street. The Bank of Florence was chartered as the First National Bank of Florence, on May 31, 1900, with the help of Mahlon D Thatcher.
New Foundations
In 1919 the bank outgrew its location in the Blunt Building. This land was purchased from the McCandless Investment Company for the construction of a new bank. The Banker's Construction Company of Denver was given the contract to build the new bank, at a cost of $13,842. It was completed in the fall of 1921.
In 1964 the building went through its first major remodeling project. The front was re-bricked and the interior was dramatically changed. Since the first major remodel project, the building's interior has changed many times. The ceiling was lowered and the balcony was removed.
Erected by the City of Florence.
