1. Hyatt / Lee Building Marker
On this site once stood a 2-story brick building. C.W. Hyatt in 1883 to house the newspaper he started the year before, the North Bend Flail. He moved the paper to Fremont in 1888 and soon after the building was bought by Charles S.J. Lee for a general store. There was a fire in the building in 1890, but it was not a total loss and after repairs, Lee opened a new "racket store" [another name for a variety store] here. Things didn't go well. By 1891, Lee was unable to pay his debts and was the subject of many lawsuits. In October 1891, Lee was checked into the Keeley Institute in Blair for treatment for alcoholism. Though C.S.J. Lee was out of the picture, the building was still called the Lee Building and housed a butcher, real estate and law offices, women's hat store, tailor, etc. In 1908, North Bend's first public library was opened in the south half of the Lee Building. In 1913, Peter F. Carey bought the Lee building and used much of it as storage for his furniture business. In 1914, Carey tore the Lee Building down and built the building you see today.
