Inscription.
The Franklin and Pittsylvania Railroad was chartered on or about March 12, 1878 as a joint venture with Franklin County, Washington City RR, VA Midland RR, and the Great Southern RR. The tracks ran a distance of 36.8 miles from Rocky Mount, VA to Gretna, VA. The F&P provided passenger, freight, and mail services allowing for economic growth in both areas. Due to a decrease in mining activity, deteriorating tracks and the affordable "Model T", the F & P made its final run in 1932.

the Franklin & Pittsylvania Railroad ran through what is now my front yard and slowed down at the Novelty Depot to grab a mailbag from a hook and toss off another. The narrow gauge railroad, which made its first run on April 16, 1880, ran thirty-one miles from Rocky Mount in Franklin County to Gretna (then called Franklin Junction and later Elba) in Pittsylvania County.
