1. History of Welcoming Marker
On October, 26, 1900, the people of Marlinton held a grand celebration welcoming the first train into their town with a ball, speakers, and sporting events. A short time later, a train station was built as a necessity for the traveling public and numerous freight customers. The Marlinton Railroad Depot was a part of the Greenbrier Division of the C&O Railway, which linked Ronceverte and Durban, West Virginia. Original construction included three rooms, a waiting room, an office for the station agent, and a large freight room.
Today as you travel into Marlinton, you will be welcomed by the depot which was restored to its original appearance after a devastating fire. A portion of the original train track is still in place. The Depot has been transformed into an artisan co-op where local artists display and sell their art. Do you notice any differences between the inside and the outside of this building?
