“Een vreemd lichtspel, geheimzinnig van wisselende glanzen, trilde over de grillige puien en gevelstenen uit” is from Querido’s 4-part novel De Jordaan, specifically De Jordaan: Mooie Karel (1925). It might be translated as, “A strange play of light, mysterious in its changing shine, vibrated over the whimsical facades and facing stones”.
