2. Johan Svendsen (Selskabet For Oslo Byes Vel).
Excerpt (in translation): Norway's first significant symphonist understood early on that he had to travel abroad and study in order to succeed in music. On his travels he became acquainted with many great composers while learning and finding his own style. Johan Svendsen is considered a classicist romantic. His music is cheerful and moody, with traces of Norwegian folk music in the melody and rhythm. Svendsen guest conducted his own works in Vienna, Moscow, London, Brussels and Helsinki. His talent and efforts were an upswing for musical life in Christiania in the 1870s, but when he moved to Copenhagen in 1883, he primarily became important for Danish musical life. There he became conductor at the Royal Theater until 1908. His work in Copenhagen became a high point in the city's musical life.(Submitted on July 24, 2024.)
