1. St. Mary’s Gate Marker
Inscription. St. Mary’s Gate (13th century) is the entrance to St. Peter’s Abbey precinct whose wall can be seen to the left in St. Mary Street and in Three Cocks Lane to the right. Opposite, John Hooper, 2nd Bishop of Gloucester, was martyred in 1555 for his Protestant faith.

3. Opposite the Gate
The park known as St. Mary’s Square faces the gate. (For orientation, note the same red car in photos 2 and 3.) Within this park is an impressive monument to Bishop John Hooper, burned at the stake on this spot as part of the effort by Queen Mary I to restore Catholicism to England.

4. Road Sign
This sign stands at the intersection of Three Cocks Lane with Westgate Street in one of Gloucester's oldest neighborhoods. Above the sign, note the coat of arms of the City of Gloucester with a sculpture of cherubs.
