Oge Log Cabin. . , In the Fall of 2012, the City of Town and Country and the Town and Country Historical Society became interested in the residence at 13348 Conway Road when they learned about the upcoming demolition of the home containing this historic log cabin. It was still in good condition as the exterior had been completely covered throughout the years, only showing it's true self on the interior. The decision was made to attempt to preserve the log cabin. , The property was first purchased by Benjamin Y. Hancock in 1825 and later purchased by George Oge. The log cabin was built around 1854. This area, was part of a settlement called New Alsace. An area called Altheim was located near the corner of Clayton and Mason Ridge Roads. These were the two original German settlements in the region that later became a part of. Town and Country. , George Oge was the designated Postmaster for New Alsace in 1875. The 1878 Pitzman Atlas shows that there was a store on the Conway Road property, along with four other buildings. George Oge lived there until his death in 1891, leaving the property to his wife and ten children. , Several improvements were made over the years to the log cabin, including adding additional rooms and a clapboard siding. At the time of the cabin's relocation, the downstairs area was the dining room and the upstairs was a bedroom. The only stones that could be salvaged from the property were from the foundation and the on site smokehouse. , The Town and Country Historical Society was able to raise the necessary funds to disassemble the log cabin, transport the logs to Drace Park, and store them until a grant could be obtained to reconstruct the log cabin there. , In the Fall of 2013, the City of Town and Country received a grant from the St. Louis County Parks Grant Commission for roughly 85% of the expenses required to reconstruct the log cabin, which commenced the following summer and was dedicated in May of 2016. The City of Town and Country paid the remaining 15% required to complete the project.
