Inscription.
General Burgoyne had more than a day's head start when General Gates began to pursue on the morning of October 10. His troops caught up with the retreating British Army at Saratoga (present day Schuylerville) within hours.

What was and is now a beautiful valley had been destroyed by the British retreat. Burgoyne's troops burned and pulled down "all the houses and bridges that were in their way. The road to Saratoga was "covered...with all manner warlike stores, including "wagons, baggage, dead carcasses, Ammunition , tents &c. Weeks later, a traveler passing through here wrote: "the whole Way from Still Water to [Saratogal was mark'ed with Devastation.... This once agreeable, and delightful Part of the Country now displayed a most shocking Picture of Havock and wild Desolation."
