1. John Nunziato Field Marker
John Nunziato was one of the greatest all-around athletes ever to graduate from Somerville High School. He earned nine letters in football, baseball, and basketball in his three years at SHS. He was chosen for the All-Star Football Squad, named MVP in Baseball in 1950, and selected for the All-Tech Tourney Basketball Team in 1949, the year SHS won the New England Championship.
John's success continued at Boston University where he earned both a BA and Master's Degree. He also earned nine letters at BU in the same three sports...the only BU athlete to ever achieve this mark. In 1954, he was named the Speare Scholar Athlete, selected for the All Star College Baseball Team, awarded the MVP in Basketball, and honored as the BU Athlete of the Year.
After serving in the US Army, John returned to Somerville in 1957 as a teacher at the Western Junior High School. In 1971, he transferred to SHS where he served as a teacher, coach, and building master until he retired in 1993. John officiated high school and college basketball for many years. From 1964 to 1972, John was coach of the SHS Football team. Under his guidance,
